College Basketball Coach Uses His Hot SEC Wife As A Recruiting Tool At Opening Press Conference

OutKick

I know we're in the midst of March Madness right now, but I've got an offseason(ish) college basketball story worth your attention. Providence officially hired Bryan Hodgson earlier this week, which nobody reading this cares about because why would you? I certainly don't. I do love the Friars, though, mainly because I had an old professor in college who was also the voice of the basketball team, so I was always up-to-date with everything Providence basketball. Anyway, Hodgson had his introductory press conference Tuesday, and buddy, let me tell you, I think this guy has got the stuff. Some folks have it, and some folks don't. Usually, you can tell right off the bat. I think Coach Hodgson has it. This is what it's all about, folks. Bryan Hodgson gets it. Happy wife, happy life. I'd imagine this new gig took some convincing with her, too, because leaving USF for Providence ain't exactly fun. You're going from Tampa to Rhode Island. Not a lot of folks choose that path in life. Frankly, they choose the reverse path. Lord knows you couldn't pay me enough to leave Florida for the Northeast. No shot. And now Hodgson has to tell his wife to leave the beautiful beaches of Florida – the West Coast ones are especially nice – and move to the Northeast? Yeah, he was always going to throw this line in there. He had no choice. Anyway, welcome to the show, Jordan Norris. This one is going to be a star. You can see it. I can see it. All of Rhode Island saw it yesterday. She's an Alabama alum – Roll Tide! – and has an Instagram account that will send Shockwaves through the Northeast. They're not ready for this SEC girl. They're not ready for who was briefly a Florida girl. She's about to run that town and there is nothing they can do about it. Let's go Friars. Let's get to work.

It Sure Sounds Like Tiger Woods Is Going To Milk His Masters Decision For All It's Worth

Mar 25, 2026 @ 8:20am
GolfPGA Tour
OutKick

The 2026 Masters will get underway in just two weeks, but despite the year's first major championship being right around the corner, literally, we still don't know if Tiger Woods will be teeing it up. Based on his most recent comments, it's likely to stay that way right up until he's forced to make a decision.Woods, who hasn't played a competitive round of golf since July 2024, made his season debut on TGL on Tuesday night for his Jupiter Links team. Many deemed the debut his ‘return to golf,' despite him only hitting about a dozen shots into a screen, with his appearance ramping up the speculation that he will give it a go at Augusta National in April. When asked about playing in next month's Masters following his team's loss on Tuesday, Woods gave his best effort in convincing everyone he hasn't come to a decision."I’ve been trying for a while. I’ve had a couple bad injuries here over the past years that I’ve had to fight through and it’s taken some time," Woods explained."But I keep trying. I want to play. I love the tournament. I’ve loved being there since I was 19 years old. It’s meant a lot to me and my family over the years. I’m going to be there either way with The Loop that’s going up there, as well as the Champions Dinner."He remained standoffish when pressed about potentially waiting until the final minute to come to a decision about playing."I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes," Woods added. "I’ll be practicing, playing at home this week and keep trying to make progress."For PGA Tour events, players must commit to playing the Friday before the opening round of the next week's tournament, but there is a grey area when it comes to the Masters finalizing its limited field. Tee times for the first two rounds of the event are released on the Tuesday before the opening round.Woods made the cut and finished 60th in his most recent Masters appearance in 2024. He withdrew from the event the year prior, but has not missed the cut at Augusta National since 1996.

Pat McAfee Drags Dan Orlovsky And His Argument Ty Simpson Is A Better Prospect Than Fernando Mendoza

Until recently, the dumbest thing Dan Orlovsky ever did was unintentionally, unwittingly and inexplicably scramble out of the back of an end zone during an NFL game almost two decades ago in order to avoid getting sacked. But then Tuesday happened. And Orlovsky, the former-NFL-backup-quarterback-turned-usually-insightful ESPN football analyst, ran out of excuses and reasons for disliking Fernando Mendoza as the top quarterback prospect in the NFL draft.Thank you, Pat McAfee. It was McAfee who delivered a withering cross-examination of Orlovsky during a regularly scheduled segment of the Pat McAfee show. And under the often pointed questions about why he has somehow decided the Heisman Trophy and national championship winner is an inferior draft prospect to Alabama's Ty Simpson, Orlovsky wilted. The conversation opened amicably enough, with McAfee allowing Orlovsky to embrace Simpson as the coming draft's best QB prospect. No, really.Orlovsky argues that he values tape over traits in judging these two QBs. He believes Simpson has a better tape than Mendoza. And to drive home his point, Orlovsky sought safety in the number of NFL general managers he says he contacted and confirmed they also think Simpson is better. This part makes me smile. One of the biggest complaints players and former players have about journalism is that it employs information from anonymous sources. And here is Orlovsky, a former player, quoting anonymous general managers as agreeing with him about Simpson.(If this is true, one assumes one of those GMs will race up to the No. 2 overall selection and pick Simpson after the Raiders pick Mendoza No. 1 overall).Anyhoo, the segment went off the rails when McAfee said multiple people who saw Mendoza in person in the biggest games were sold on Mendoza. Orlovsky immediately pushed back, asking, "What biggest games?"Craziness ensued.Mendoza won the Big Ten championship game, the Rose Bowl championship, the Peach Bowl championship and, the Orange Bowl championship, which happened to also deliver the national championship."So the College Football Playoff is a big mockery and scam. Doesn’t mean anything. Like, these games just don’t matter? Like what do you mean what are the biggest games?" McAfee asked. "They have a full [expletive] committee! They have billions of dollars in TV rights for what the biggest games are."Orlovsky, connecting via his smart phone while sitting in a car, answered, "I'm aware of that dude."Well, then why was he asking?Orlovsky raised the white flag – actually he didn't but rather just fidgeted with his white cap – and acknowledged McAfee’s point, but quickly pivoted to the Big Ten Championship Game.Orlovsky tried to come back from getting dragged by offering "factual information." He said that in the Big Ten championship, Indiana was "down 13-6 going into the fourth quarter.""I'm giving you factual information, not opinion," Orlovsky insisted. "They had six points through the first three quarters in the Big Ten title game."That kind of "factual information," one supposes, is meant to somehow prove Mendoza isn't as good as Simpson. Except the information is wrong. The Hoosiers were leading 13-10 through three quarters in a game they ultimately won.And even if Orlovsky's fictional score was accurate, it proves nothing about Mendoza versus Simpson. It doesn't speak to how they respond in big games because Indiana and Alabama actually played against one another on Jan. 1 in a big game and Indiana roasted the Crimson Tide, 38-3.Mendoza completed 14-of-16 passes for 192 yards and 3 TDs in the game. Simpson completed 12-of-16 passes for 67 yards. Simpson has a total of 15 starts during his college career, all of them last season. That lack of experience and seasoning is a concern among multiple scouts. Mendoza has 34 career college starts, including 16 consecutive victories against no losses in 2025-26.That doesn't mean Mendoza is better, but it's a box he checks off for pro scouts that Simpson does not.The situation hit its climax when McAfee pointed out that Orlovsky and Simpson share the same agency that represents them and mentioned how people on social media are thinking he's been paid off. Both the player and the analyst are represented by CAA."The agents work for us, not the other way around," Orlovsky said.I don't believe Orlovsky is being paid to support Simpson over Mendoza. I do believe he's proven he's capable of doing and saying dumb things – and this interview proved that.

New Jaxon Smith-Njigba Contract Shows Difficulty Washington 'Millionaires' Tax' Causes For Seahawks

Mar 25, 2026 @ 7:40am
FootballNFLSeattle Seahawks
OutKick

The blaring headline throughout the NFL on Monday was that Seattle Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba became the NFL's new highest-paid wide receiver, passing Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase. And those banners were accurate, but only on the surface. Once we dig deeper and take state income taxes into account, the difference between what Smith-Njigba is going to take home compared to what Chase is going to take home effectively means Chase will still have more money.Chase will have approximately $156,542,800 after state income taxes are figured. Smith-Njigba will have approximately $156,297,229 after state income taxes. This despite the fact Smith-Njigba's deal is $7.6 million richer. The reason for the difference is that Chase, playing primarily in red-state Ohio, is expected to pay approximately $4,457,200 in state income tax on the new money in the contract he signed last year that runs through 2029. Smith-Njigba, playing in blue state Washington and in a division that includes two annual visits to rivals in blue state California, is expected to pay approximately $12,302,771 in state income tax on the new money in his deal he agreed to this week that runs through 2031. (The sound you're now hearing is blue state politicians scurrying for their millionaires-are-bad talking points). Most media think they're comparing apples to apples when NFL contracts are signed in blue states like California, New York and soon, Washington, compared to similar deals signed in red states like Ohio, Tennessee, Nevada, Texas and Florida. They are not the same. The reason is that blue states typically tax the living Brinks truck out of their residents, especially their wealthiest residents, such as professional athletes.  California, home to the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, has the highest state income tax rate in the country at 13.3 percent (including a one percent mental health services tax) for salaries above $1 million, which all NFL players with one year of experience make at minimum.New York, home to the Buffalo Bills, and New Jersey, home to the Giants and Jets, also have progressive state income tax rates that are in the double digits for top earners.Meanwhile, the red states that are home to the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars collect no state income tax. Nevada, which President Donald Trump won in 2024, also has zero state income tax affecting Las Vegas Raiders players.True story: Years ago when Mike Tannenbaum was the Dolphins' executive VP of football operations, his pitch to agents to get their clients to sign always included the phrase "No state income tax."The same could be true with the Seattle Seahawks because, up until recently, the specter of a state income tax didn't exist in Washington.Washington hasn't had a state income tax since it became the 42nd state in 1889. But Washington's Democrat-run house and Democrat-run senate passed a state income tax bill this month on anyone earning over $1 million per year.Democrat governor Bob Ferguson has signaled he favors the measure and could sign it into law before the deadline in early April. Barring a Ferguson change of heart or successful ensuing legal challenges, that would mean the new "millionaires' tax" law begins collecting in 2028. Washington will impose a tax on residents "measured by Washington adjusted taxable income wherever derived."That will tax personal income over $1 million per year at a rate of 9.9 percent on a significant majority of Seahawks players starting in 2028. That makes Smith-Njigba the most prominent Seattle player with the biggest contract affected by the Democrats' new tax.Smith-Njigba agreed on Monday to a whopping $168.6 million extension that averages $42.15 million on an annual new money average basis. That deal surpasses the $161 million extension Chase signed last season that averaged $40.25 million on an annual new money average basis. The $7.6 million gross new money difference between the two deals is where the headlines about Smith-Njigba beating the Chase deal came from. Except, those numbers won't appear on the Seattle receiver's take-home pay.The fact Chase plays in a Republican-controlled state is about to reward his wallet because the Ohio legislature, with Republican majorities in both the house and senate, lowered the state income tax rate from 3.5 percent to 3.125 percent in 2025 and this year the state is going to a 2.75 percent flat tax rate for everyone. No Democrats voted for these Ohio tax decreases. And what does that mean for Chase?More of his own money stays with him instead of going to the state in which he lives or states in which the Bengals play road games. And, yes, the nearly $4.5 million or so in state income tax over five years is a lot. But it is over 2 ½ times less in state income taxes than Smith-Njigba is about to pay. Per current Washington state law, Smith-Njigba won't pay any state income tax in 2026 or 2027. But he will pay state income tax in other states because he's charged by those states when the Seahawks visit. So Smith-Njigba is paying at minimum $221,108 in state income tax for the next two years and that doesn't include two 2027 away games because the opponent and location have not yet been determined. When Washington's new law kicks in, the NFL's reigning offensive player of the year will still have four years remaining on a contract that runs through the 2031 season. And over the span of those four seasons that the new "millionaires' tax" is in effect, Smith-Njigba must pay that 9.9 percent state income tax for gross salary every year above $1 million. The truth is Smith-Njigba is going to find himself in something of a state income tax vortex because the Seahawks play in the NFC West that includes the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. So he's going to be taxed at a higher rate than Washington's rate for those two games. And that's every season. The Seahawks, by the way, aren't thrilled about the new Washington state income tax. Privately, they dislike it because their state legislature is forcing them to work much harder and dig deeper into their salary structure to pay their players competitively. General manager John Schneider said recently on his Seattle Sports 710-AM radio show that having no state income tax was a tool his team often used to its advantage."I think it is for all the pro teams here in town. It's always been a huge attraction, especially competing with the California teams ," Schneider said. "It's been a big deal for us. So, it's going to sting, from a recruiting standpoint and what that looks like."
