Patrons Hit The Deck As Jack Nicklaus Yanks Ceremonial Masters Tee Shot

It's Thursday, at The Masters. The best five words in golf, baby! We are BACK. Augusta is open for business, The Masters is underway, and all is well with the world. The forecast looks great all weekend. Jim Nantz is at the ready after having a few months to reset after 22 straight weeks of Tony Romo. It's just a beautiful time of year. The unofficial launch of springtime. Sure, it technically started a few weeks ago … but did it? I don't think so. In my mind, spring hasn't sprung until Jack Nicklaus tees it up at Augusta, and hits the ceremonial first shot to start the tournament. Just a nice, easy, beautiful ball right down the middle of the fairway. The Golden Bear never misses! Absolute stripe show every time.… I said EVERY TIME!One of us! One of us! One of us! For starters, how good does Jack Nicklaus look for 86? I'd KILL to be hooking shots into the pines at 86. If that's the case, I've done something right. I have my doubts, though. Look, it's not Jack's best, but it's probably his most relatable. We've all been there before, especially with an early tee time. Those are the worst. I've long said that I'm an afternoon golfer. I despise rolling out of bed and having to hit a golf ball. It's miserable. One time, I had an especially early tee time whilst on vacation in St. Augustine. The sun hadn't even come up fully yet. I stepped up to the first tee, still half-asleep (hungover), and shanked one so violently to the right, that I nearly took out a little girl who was there with her class on a trip. They were all on the putting green, which was to the right of the tee box, and I nearly sent her to the hospital. I was so scarred, I don't think I hit another shot until the turn. It was miserable. Anyway, I say all that to say this … Jack Nicklaus yanking one into the woods at 86 and nearly decaptiating someone is more impressive than anything any other 86-year-old on the planet will do today. Get that man a breakfast ball and get him back in the fairway, stat!

NFL Hasn't Responded To Florida Attorney General On Rooney Rule, But He Has Choice Words For Goodell

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier says he still has not received an official response from the NFL after he put the league on notice that the Rooney Rule violates the Florida Civil Rights Act, but he did push back on Commissioner Roger Goodell's suggestion he is trying to change the league's values."I don't think this is about values," Uthmeier told OutKick and Fox News in an exclusive interview on Wednesday. "I think it's about the law. You know, we are not a racist people. I do not believe the NFL is a racist organization. When you look at the composition of the players and the contracts altogether with staff, you have a majority minority organization. So this notion that they need to kneel down and apologize is wrong. They need to follow the law." The NFL's hiring practices, in part guided by the Rooney Rule, which was instituted in 2003 and has been expanded multiple times, came under Uthmeier's scrutiny when he sent a letter to the league outlining why he believes it violates Florida law — thus affecting the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Uthmeier sent a letter to Goodell, which the NFL acknowledged it received. He also sent a copy of that letter to the ownership of the three Florida teams.Goodell's initial response at the NFL annual meeting when asked what the NFL would change as a result was, "One thing that doesn't change is our values."Beyond that sound bite, the league has not responded even as the May 1 deadline Uthmeier set for a response approaches."No official response, no, sir," Uthmeier said, adding that "is a little surprising." And what happens after May 1 if the league decides this matter isn't worthy of an official response or that its Rooney Rule is just fine as written?"We will likely, in short order, I mean, I'm always willing to have conversations. We'll hear arguments," Uthmeier said. "If they can make the case that this doesn't violate Florida law, I'll certainly listen to it. But we feel pretty confident that it does violate the law, and then we will likely soon thereafter file a complaint in Florida state court." The NFL previously told OutKick the Rooney Rule "does not mandate hiring decisions and "those decisions are made by each club." By saying this, the league is highlighting that the Rooney Rule does not violate any hiring practice laws. But are interview practice rules that favor one race over another illegal in Florida?"I do believe it's illegal, but you noticed they focused on the interview angle," Uthmeier said. "They didn't even address the other two parts of the rule that do explicitly have racial hiring quotas for some of the other positions. They didn't address the awarding of draft picks if you check some of these DEI boxes. "You can't provide advantages in the employment space that you're denying to somebody else. So I mean, if you have a situation where, let's say, you want a black coach, you know who you want. You see the candidate and he's the best. There's no rule that says, well, you still got to go interview two white guys. That, to me, is the example that shows how, even in the interview space, this is unlawful. The other two, and I noticed they didn't comment on, you know, the other position. That is a quota."Art Rooney, a surviving namesake of the Rooney Rule, told reporters at the annual meeting that "everybody is in favor of the Rooney Rule" and there was no discussion about getting rid of it.That seemingly sends a message: Uthmeier is in for a legal battle with the NFL."Seems that way," Uthmeier said. "You know, there are still some meetings in time ahead. I assume they're talking to counsel about their legal exposure. And, you know, if they've got lawyers that are reading the law the way we are, I'm sure somebody's telling them it might be wise to apply this differently in Florida or possibly carve out some aspects of the rule. But if they choose not to, again, we believe under Florida's civil rights laws that their employment practice is illegal, and we will bring civil action."The NFL recently altered its Accelerator Program, which originally was designed to put minority head coach and general manager candidates in settings where they could meet NFL owners. Those opportunities to get in front of people doing the hiring were only offered to minorities, but after pausing the program in 2025, the league says it will restart the program this year in a reimagined format. Now white men are allowed to participate after being previously excluded.Uthmeier says that is "progress."But, he adds, there is more work to do, and he doesn't mind ending the Rooney Rule to make an example of the NFL."I think it's come to an end," he said. "We do see a shift in corporate America. We've seen a huge shift to get away from ESG and DEI and things that aren't focused on doing business, that are not focused on profit, but are instead focused on a socialist agenda that people aren't paying for, that shareholders aren't approving. "When people buy stock in a company, they want to see returns. They don't want to see socialist, Marxist ideology … The endgame, for me, would be to have the rule repealed. And this goes beyond the NFL. I mean, is this impacting a huge number of the work force in Florida? 'It's not, but it's the bigger picture that when the NFL is carrying on this very public, racially discriminatory employment practice, it sends a message to everybody in the country, other employers and employees that this is OK, and it's not. It's unconstitutional. We'd like to see it repealed and send a message to other corporations out there that people need to be hired based on merit."

We've got major NFL drama happening on our second Hump Day of April? I mean, come on! The script-writers outdid themselves on this one. My hat is OFF to them. Well done. And hey! We're not in the middle of WWIII today! That's always a bonus. The panicans were wrong again. Weird. How many times have they said we're on the cusp of WWIII at this point, only to be literally dead wrong every single time? It's almost like Trump has a playbook. If you've even halfway paid attention over the past decade or so, you knew exactly what Power Plant Day was going to be. The First Lady, who is wonderfully ignorant of all things serious in the world, goes, "You didn't tell me we were on the brink of WWIII today!" while we were brushing our teeth before bed. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Some lady on TikTok said she was ‘shaking’ because she was so scared of what Trump was going to do.""That was the point, babe. That's always the point. Every single time. Now, let's go watch Roseanne."And watch, we did! Let's roll. Welcome to a Hump Day Nightcaps – the one where Sophie Cunningham dumps out new SI Swimsuit content on the eve(ish) of the WNBA season. What else? I've got Vrabel/Russini drama (duh), Kay Adams turned 40 in a bikini this week, and it was a BANNER night for major league baseball last night. And by that, I mean fists were flying and managers were ON FIRE. Grab yourself some headgear just to be safe, and strap in for a violent Hump Day 'Cap!Normally, I'd start with the news-of-the-day here, which is the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini … speculation. We'll get to it. Joe led off with it this morning, and we respect our elders here at Nightcaps. So, we'll instead head to the diamond, where we had our first big night of fireworks in this young MLB season. First, while everyone was sleeping — including myself — the Angels and Braves beat the absolute piss out of each other on a random April night. Head on a SWIVEL!Amazing. The First Lady is a huge Braves fan, and we were joking a couple weeks ago about how she had NO idea who Walt Weiss was. Feel like nobody really did … until last night. Give this ANIMAL a key to Atlanta, pronto! He should never buy another beer. Sure, Jorge Soler is obviously a fan-favorite there for what he did in 2021, but still … this was a pivotal moment for Walt Weiss. New manager. Trying to earn the respect of the clubhouse. Trying to find your voice and your way, and then BAM — he puts on a form-tackling CLINIC. That clip — and that picture — should be shown in high school football film rooms across the country next month when spring practice starts. It's beautiful. Walt wasn't the only manager who was fired up on a random Tuesday night in early April:Amazing. I feel like I really do appreciate managers getting tossed now more than ever before. We just don't get them as often, for obvious reasons. Everything is basically fixable at this point with ABS and reviews. The human element, as I've said many times, is basically dead. But, every once in a while, we get a moment like this where an ump decides to call a phantom balk, and he gets his ass LIT UP by a behemoth of a man. I'd sit there and take it too. John Schneider is massive. Imagine the amount of Copenhagan spit in this poor ump's face. It had to have been just vile. The good old days. Simpler times. Better times. Speaking of simple things, let's check in on the luxury hotel where Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini had a quiet little off-the-record meet-'n-greet last month!Well … it ain't exactly a Motel 6. This place is otherworldly. Here are some of the quotes the Ambiente Sedona uses to describe themselves:Nothing to see here!Look, I'm not here to speculate or get in trouble. I know how these things work. There's a reason I haven't shared the pictures, as if y'all haven't already seen them. I'm simply diving into the resort that's at the center of the drama, and it seems like an interesting venue. That's all. It's just an odd place to drive two hours to for the day, and then head on back home, which is what Vrabes did, according to Page Six. It's not exactly how the resort is marketed. That's not me speculating, either. The Ambiente literally has a banner going across the middle of the website that keeps a running tally of how many anniversaries (1,960), proposals (158), honeymoon (324) and babymoons (324) it has hosted. Sure doesn't seem like the business center is getting used a ton there. Just a hunch. Anyway, we'll keep y'all posted, as always. What a story. OK, quick rapid-fire before we get on outta here. I've got two meetings this afternoon. Can't wait. First up? Happy 40th, Kay Adams! That's our girl! Been a minute since Queen Kay stopped by class, but the season is over and it's time for a little R&R before the draft later this month. Good to see Kay is getting some well-deserved rest. She had a massive year, and it appears we're in store for a big offseason. Happy 40th the GOAT!OK, that's it for today. Let's end it by pumping out some new SI bikini content with Sophie Cunningham. It's only fitting. Let's have a big night. OutKick Nightcaps is a daily column set to run Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. (roughly, we’re not robots).Thoughts on Vrabes and Dianna? Email me at [email protected].

Justin Thomas Takes Money Off Jordan Spieth, Max Homa With Electric Masters Par 3 Contest Ace

GolfPGA Tour

There is no winner's purse involved in the annual Masters Par 3 contest, but that doesn't mean money doesn't regularly change hands between players, which is exactly what happened in Justin Thomas' group on Wednesday afternoon at Augusta National.Thomas made the 116th hole-in-one in the event's history with a perfect shot on the second hole of the Par 3 course. After his golf ball disappeared into the bottom of the cup, the two-time major winner immediately turned to his playing partners and good friends, Jordan Spieth and Max Homa, and not so subtly let them know they owed him some cash.Anyone who makes an ace during the Masters Par 3 contest receives a crystal vase from Augusta National, but it's safe to assume JT was more concerned with taking coin off of Spieth and Homa. The obvious question here is just how much cash were JT, Homa, and Spieth playing for in their hole-in-one game. Normal golfers out there who aren't worth millions and millions of dollars typically have a built-in hole-in-one pool in whatever gambling game they're playing on the course worth $100.Shortly after making his ace, Thomas revealed on the ESPN broadcast that his group's hole-in-one game involved another zero, with Spieth and Homa on the hook for $1,000 each.Homa has made over $29 million in his career and Spieth has taken home over $67 million, so forking over $1,000 doesn't exactly make a dent, but it's safe to say neither of them will enjoy paying out JT.This isn't the first time Spieth has witnessed a JT ace during the Masters Par 3 contest. He just so happened to be playing alongside Rickie Fowler and Thomas in 2016 when the pair made back-to-back holes-in-one on the fourth hole. It seems like the Masters Par 3 contest has become an expensive event for Spieth over the years.

Former Major Champion Offers Up Refreshingly Blunt Thoughts On Tiger Woods' DUI Arrest

GolfPGA Tour

Tiger Woods is not on site at Augusta National for the 2026 Masters, but he's still a huge piece of the overarching conversation given his recent car accident and DUI arrest. The majority of players have been asked about Woods' current situation away from the sport, and while everyone's comments have echoed similar words of support and encouragement, Jason Day didn't let him entirely off the hook.Woods overturned his Land Rover SUV after striking a trailer attached to the back of a pickup truck on March 27. Authorities determined he was under the influence and was ultimately charged with two misdemeanors: DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after declining to submit to a urinalysis. According to the arrest affidavit, two Hydrocodone pills were found in his pocket during a search at the scene of the accident.READ: Tiger Woods Had No Real Choice But To Miss The MastersDay, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, is far from the only person out there whose reaction to Woods' accident and DUI included a feeling of selfishness, but he is the only player to use that phrasing with the media ahead of this week's Masters."He’s just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles," Day told Doug Ferguson of the AP. "It’s unfortunate. The only thing that I don’t understand is that it’s a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm’s way, as well."But when you’re the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything, and that’s probably why he’s driving and a little bit under the influence."Day's assessment of the situation is similar to most others. Woods is clearly struggling, but when you've been a larger-than-life figure since you were a toddler being showcased on national television and achieved the title of arguably the greatest athlete of an entire generation, it's normal to assume that Woods has a mindset that he "can do almost anything."It's okay to have multiple feelings towards Woods' recent accident and subsequent DUI-related charge: you can feel for a human struggling with life, but also be frustrated that he got behind the wheel of a car and put himself and others in danger.
