Devin Williams was supposed to be the answer at the back end of the Yankees’ bullpen. Instead, he is turning into the problem, and fans have had enough.

After coughing up another late-inning lead in Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Padres, Williams told reporters he was struggling to find a proper landing spot on a soggy mound.

Cue the eye-rolls in Yankee land.

Fans took to social media to torch the two-time All-Star for what they saw as just another excuse. And with good reason: Williams has been directly involved in three of the Yankees’ five blown leads in the eighth inning or later, the most in all of MLB this season.

One fan wrote, “One more thing…so the Padres loved the soggy mound. Man I hate excuses..”

Another fan commented, “Team has no fight when it falls behind. Too many one run loses. Worst bullpen in 30 years…”

One X user wrote, “Nice excuses the Padres seemed to pitch just fine.
If I made excuses like this at my job I’d probably get fi
red.”

Another Bronx fan wrote, “Gm has been horrible for a long time now, not sure why so many people give him a pass , especially the owner.”

One angry fan wrote, “This guy just has excuses after excuses.”

Another fan replied, “Well start adjusting!!!. Weaver has been great..he was due for 1 bad day. NO EXCUSES.”

Devin Williams Is Enduring The Worst Season Of His Career

Over the past four years, his ERA has been remarkably consistent: 15 earned runs in 54 innings in 2021, 13 earned in 60.2 innings in 2022, just 10 earned in 58.2 innings in 2023, and only three earned in 21.2 innings last season. But 2025 has been a different story. In less than a dozen innings, William has 13 earned runs. This is almost equal to the total runs Devin Williams gave up over the last two seasons combined.

The Yankees traded Nestor Cortes, Caleb Durbin, and cash to the Brewers in December 2024 to land Williams, a guy with a 1.83 career ERA and one of the nastiest changeups in the game.

They didn’t just want a setup man.

They handed him the ninth inning. They trusted him to close.

But now, even in the eighth, it’s panic time when Williams steps on the mound.

If he keeps throwing up excuses like “soggy mounds” instead of clean innings, the Bronx faithful won’t just boo, they will be calling for a bullpen shakeup.
