Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux is part of a group that is looking into purchasing the team, according to a report.

TSN hockey reporter Pierre LeBrun reported on Wednesday that Fenway Sports Group has been looking to sell a partial share of the Penguins. Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox and Premier League team Liverpool, bought a majority share of the Penguins in 2021. LeBrun says the group of Ron Burkle, David Morehouse and Lemieux are looking into buying back the team.

Lemieux has owned a fractional share of the Penguins since selling to Fenway in 2021.

The franchise icon Lemieux had a long ownership history with the team. The Penguins filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Lemieux purchased the team at that time to bring them out of bankruptcy. He later became the first player/owner in history

Lemieux, 59, is a Hall of Famer. He was a 9-time All-Star, 3-time Hart Trophy winner, and 2-time Stanley Cup winner during his playing career.
