ESPN host Rece Davis addressed his viral NFL Draft confrontation with Mel Kiper Jr.
Kiper Jr. went viral for his rant about the NFL after Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft last Saturday. Kiper accused the league of being “clueless” when it came to evaluating quarterbacks, prompting some spirited pushback from host Davis.
The nature of the interaction led some to wonder if Davis and Kiper have legitimate bad feelings toward each other. In an appearance on Outkick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich” podcast, Davis said that was not true.
“Mel’s job is to make his rankings of players and defend them,” Davis said. “I didn’t mind him disagreeing, and I don’t mind him saying anything he wanted to say when we’re there, but I thought as a group the part that we were overlooking was the old Occam’s razor philosophy. The most likely explanation for something is probably correct. We don’t know for sure, but it was almost certain at that point in the draft that something had happened in the pre-draft process involving Shedeur Sanders that was keeping teams from taking him.
“The thing that I do love about Mel is he stuck to what he believed. He kept on. The other thing that I pointed out on my podcast yesterday: there was never a problem between Mel and me. People asked me, ‘Are you guys okay?’ Yeah. We’re great. Mel’s a legend. I love working with Mel. We didn’t have a single cross word in between. I didn’t even know there was an issue until I started getting texts.”

Kiper’s meltdown certainly made for entertaining television, and Davis knows that. He would not have been doing his job had he not offered at least some pushback from the opposing viewpoint.
Kiper is a firm believer that Sanders is the best quarterback in the class. If he is proven right, his angry rant will look a lot better in retrospect a few years down the road.
