Los Angeles Chargers players will have epic customized patches on their jerseys for offseason practices.

The patches on NFL player jerseys usually feature sponsors or a “C” if they’re a designated team captain. Players who win the annual Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award also get to wear the special uniform patch for the remainder of their careers.

With mandatory minicamp underway, some folks noticed Chargers players wearing jersey patches that feature personal and team accomplishments. You can see the special patches worn by quarterback Justin Herbert and safety Derwin James below:

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh explained why he introduced the unique jersey feature to his players, per Eric Smith of the official team website.

“Like a resumé. Kind of reminds me how a [military] general has different patches. Some day they’ll be able to put that jersey up in a frame, put it on a wall, say something really good about themselves, it will be what they accomplished as a pro football player. I like that.”

Per Smith, James’ patches represent his status as a captain, an All-Pro, his two nominations for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year honors and his assistance in getting the Los Angeles Chargers to the postseason three times.

The Chargers had a successful first year under Harbaugh, who returned to the NFL after a nine-year run at Michigan culminating in a national championship. The Bolts finished 11-6 and reached the postseason for just the third time since 2014, though they were humiliated by the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.

The Chargers will look to kick off the 2025 season on a high note when they play Patrick Mahomes and the rival Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 5. That game will be held at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the NFL International Series.

Los Angeles hasn’t defeated Kansas City since Week 3 of the 2021 season, dropping seven straight meetings. We’ll see if Harbaugh and Herbert can reverse the fortunes when they kick off the season in three months.
