The NBA officially announced the MVP for the 2024-25 season on Wednesday night. The finalists for the award included Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. In the end, it was Shai who took home the honor, capping off a spectacular season with his first MVP award.

Like everyone else, Giannis Antetokounmpo anticipated this outcome. However, after ESPN’s Shams Charania shared the MVP news on X, the Bucks star couldn’t help but add a humorous touch to the moment. He retweeted the announcement and shared his surprise in a light-hearted way.

What??!!!! Did shams got hacked no way this is true??!!” Giannis tweeted in response.

Gilgeous-Alexander earned a total of 913 points from the voting panel, beating out Jokic, who received 787 points, and Antetokounmpo, who trailed with 470. Statistically, Shai had a standout regular season, averaging 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. His numbers strengthened his case for MVP.

What’s more, Shai is the only MVP finalist whose team is still in the championship race. The Oklahoma City Thunder are currently facing the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals and lead the series 1-0 after Game 1 win.

Fans had plenty to say after Giannis Antetokounmpo humorously questioned the legitimacy of Shai’s MVP win. Some took it lightly, responding with humor.

Don’t say hacked, Shai might think you’re talking about a foul and go to the FT line,” joked one fan.

Another fan turned Giannis’ own words against him.

“What??!!!! Did Giannis got hacked no way this is true??!!” he wrote.

“How does one even reason he got hacked,” one comment read.

“You got robbed and we all just saw it,” one user commented.

Regardless of reactions online, Gilgeous-Alexander is clearly enjoying a high point in his career. By winning MVP, he joins Steve Nash as the only Canadian players in history to receive the prestigious honor.
