Rafael Furcal, once a staple at shortstop in Major League Baseball and a three-time All-Star, now finds himself at the center of a troubling legal situation.

The 47-year-old turned himself in to Sunrise police on Wednesday, facing two serious felony charges. Just hours later, authorities released his mugshot, marking a stark contrast to the once-celebrated athlete who helped lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series title.

Furcal, who played 14 seasons in the big leagues, including stints with the Braves, Dodgers, Cardinals, and Marlins, now stands accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle.

TMZ Sports first confirmed the arrest, citing Broward County Jail records. Furcal was booked around 2:15 PM before posting bond and walking free later that day.

According to Spanish sports journalist Tenchy Rodriguez, Furcal told reporters he acted in self-defense. He allegedly threw a stone at a truck driver who, he claimed, was threatening him with a knife. While Furcal says he felt cornered, the investigation remains active, and police have yet to release an official statement clarifying the incident’s timeline or circumstances.

Court documents show that Sunrise authorities issued a warrant for Furcal’s arrest two days before he surrendered. At this stage, the only publicly confirmed details are the charges: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly object at an occupied vehicle, both felonies under Florida law. Local officials have not responded to requests for further comment.

Furcal debuted with the Atlanta Braves in 2000, capturing the NL Rookie of the Year award. He built a strong résumé over his career, hitting .284 with 113 home runs and 314 stolen bases. His knack for highlight-reel plays earned him three All-Star selections with three different teams. Fans remember his unassisted triple play in 2003 and his key role in the Cardinals’ 2011 championship run.

Now, Rafael Furcal’s name is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. While he maintains he acted in defense, the seriousness of the charges suggests a long legal battle could lie ahead. As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to surface about what led to the violent encounter involving the former MLB standout.
