Leody Taveras at first base

Baseball fans were left stunned by a scoring change made after the New York Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash., on Wednesday night.

Leody Taveras was leading off the bottom of the third inning for the Mariners in a scoreless game. He hit a routine groundball to second baseman DJ LeMahieu. First baseman Ben Rice initially went to try to field the ball, so he had to scramble back toward first base. Pitcher Will Warren also went to cover first, but he wasn’t sure if Rice would take the throw from LeMahieu. Neither player went for the throw, which hit Taveras, allowing him to reach base.

LeMahieu was initially charged with a throwing error on the play. However, the official scorer made a change after the game and gave Taveras a hit.

The logic behind the change is that LeMahieu’s throw was fine. The mistake was a mental one between Rice and Warren, who couldn’t decide who would take the throw. Baseball does not consider mental mistakes to be official scoring errors, which is why there was a change made.

Fans saw the routine groundball hit by Taveras and couldn’t believe he ended up being given a hit.

The Mariners scored two runs later in the inning on a double by Julio Rodriguez to go up 2-0. At the time the ball from Taveras was considered an error, the two runs were unearned. But once the scoring change was made after the game, Warren was charged with two earned runs. Bad break for him.
