The 2025 MLB trade deadline is two months away, but the San Diego Padres are making headlines already. With the team aiming to solidify their playoff position, it’s clear that they need some more pitching depth.

San Diego was the hottest team to start this season, and they remained undefeated for a long time. However, they lost their top position to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The franchise never had a huge offseason with ownership issues. It turns out that they have room for improvement,t and they have their eyes set on their top prospect.

The Padres need to bolster their pitching and are poised to promote top pitching prospect Tyson Neighbors to the major league roster. Neighbors is the team’s No. 15 prospect and has impressed scouts and fans with his electric fastball. He could be the perfect weapon for their postseason.

Tyson Neighbors was drafted in the fourth round in 2024 and has quickly climbed through the Padres’ system. His dominant strikeout numbers have helped him a lot. Neighbors has posted a 3.86 ERA with nine strikeouts in just 4.2 innings, and his recent outings for High-A Fort Wayne. The talented pitcher also has a sharp curveball and a power slider.

Oscar Gonzalez can be taken out of San Diego’s uniform as he has been placed on unconditional release waivers. Gonzalez will soon be on his way to Japan to play for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball.

The franchise has released the outfielder to allow him to seek a job in Japan. San Diego already has a talented roster. Gonzalez was not on the team’s main roster, so it made sense for the franchise to part ways with the slugger.

Tyson Neighbors is the ultimate candidate for the team. Neighbors will need to make a few starts in the big leagues and build a reputation to become the team’s top pitcher. After a tough week, San Diego dropped in their week 8 MLB power rankings by one spot.
