The NFL is set to decide on whether players will be allowed to participate in the 2028 Olympics.

With flag football to be introduced at the next summer games, fans are looking forward to seeing some of their favorite stars show out. Of course, the league would have to permit it, but the feelings on the upcoming vote are positive.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the owners will vote at their meeting in Minnesota this Tuesday, with 24 votes needed to confirm that NFL stars will indeed be able to play when the games come around again.

One source told Scheffler that it shouldn’t be very difficult to reach a vote that would allow NFL players to participate in the 2028 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has already expressed his support for the games, given the international exposure they would bring.

“That’s exciting and positive for the NFL,” he said, per ESPN. “I can see that and identify with that real quick… I’m a fan of what the Olympics can do for interest in your sport.”

NFL Participation In 2028 Olympics Would Require A Lot More Than Votes

The required number of votes wouldn’t make the decision final, but it would allow the league to continue negotiating with the NFL Players Association, as there is much to be discussed, including procedure and injury risk.

As it stands, there are plans to allow any NFL player under contract to try out for an Olympic team. However, only one player from each team would be able to participate, with Team USA to be capped at 10 players.

Insurance policies to protect injured players and a salary cap credit for injuries are also topics to be negotiated if the vote passes.

The Olympic committee and the NFL would also need to arrange a schedule that does not conflict with players’ commitment to their teams and the league.

Details still “remain a long way off,” per ESPN. But the minimum of 24 votes would get the ball rolling.
